Changing the Future: “Being comfortable about being uncomfortable”

Posted: January 12, 2018

“Run from what’s comfortable, forget safety, live where you fear to live,” said a thirteenth century poet and mystic who had got tired of the familiar and the routine.

Whilst there’s no point in being uncomfortable for the sake of it, if we want the sport ourselves to grow and improve, then we need to push beyond what we are currently doing, which will involve some discomfort.

Tackling the subject “Being comfortable about being uncomfortable” at next weekend’s Changing the Future event is Gemma Fay, perfectly qualified having become Scotland’s most internationally-capped (203 times) football player, had a spell as an actress and recently took a change of direction in a new career with rugby.

A new approach to Strength & Conditioning with minimal equipment

Posted: January 10, 2018

How does a rowing club start an S&C (Strength & Conditioning) programme with limited knowledge and little equipment - can it be done?

“Yes,” is the unanimous reply from Dave Hughes, Senior S&C Coach at the sportscotland institute of sport and Lead S&C Coach with the hugely successful University of Edinburgh rowing programme.

How to become a better version of yourself with growth mindset

Posted: January 8, 2018

Growth mindset has been a hot topic in recent years.  For those who have not yet come across the term, in a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the starting point.

So, if you are an athlete, a coach, parent, club leader or volunteer you can become an even better version of yourself through learning about growth mindset.

To help you do so we are delighted to welcome Jamie McBrearty, Mindset Manager, Leisure and Culture Dundee, who will be speaking at our Changing the Future weekend on 20th and 21st January at the sportscotland National Sports Training Centre in Largs.

Meet the new Glasgow University Boat Club Head Coach, Patrick (Paddy) Hudson

Posted: January 3, 2018

We took the opportunity to catch up with Paddy Hudson, Glasgow University Boat Club's new Head Coach, as he gets started in his new role.

What caught your eye when the Head Coach post at Glasgow University Boat Club came up?
There’s a great history and tradition with rowing at Glasgow of which I was already aware.  More recently I watched the girls’ crews race at Henley Women’s last year and was impressed.  It feels like a Club that has a good amount of headroom for further development, and the basics in place to facilitate that development.

Upping our game to become more attractive to new members and investors

Posted: December 28, 2017

Like it or not funding in sport is a changing world.   Such is the pull on resources today that sports clubs and governing bodies need to make a stronger case than ever for why others should consider investing in them.

To explain how we can adapt to make our clubs more attractive to potential funders, Linda MacDonald from Scotland’s largest independent trust, The Robertson Trust, will be joining us at our Changing the Future weekend at the sportscotland Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre, Largs (20-21 January 2018).
