Scottish Rowing recognises Ian ‘Chalky’ White of St Andrew Boat Club as its Volunteer of the Year for 2025, celebrating an exceptional contribution to rowing over many years.

The award was presented last week at the club’s Meggetland boathouse by Scottish Rowing President Mike Martin and Chief Executive Lee Boucher.

Presented as part of Scottish Rowing’s annual awards, the Volunteer of the Year honour recognises individuals whose commitment, time and energy make a lasting difference to their club and the wider rowing community. Chalky’s contribution stands firmly in that category.

At St Andrew Boat Club in Edinburgh, he has been a constant presence - quietly getting on with the work that keeps the club moving. From repairing and maintaining boats to supporting members on and off the water, his impact is both practical and personal. More recently, his role in establishing and leading the club’s ‘Boatshed team’ has helped ensure the growing membership can continue to access the sport.

Mike Martin, President of Scottish Rowing, said:

“Ian ‘Chalky’ White is a bit of an institution - everybody knows his name. Sprinkling positivity wherever he goes, Chalky is happiest around boats and boaties. Just as well, as he has been a stalwart of Scottish Rowing, and especially St Andrew Boat Club, for a very long time.

“Whether it is coaching, towing boats, fixing boats or simply offering a helping hand, he continues to dedicate a huge amount of time to the sport. His founding and leadership of the ‘Boatshed team’ are helping to keep the club’s fleet on the water for a growing membership.

“I am delighted that his commitment has been recognised with this award. Well done Chalky - and I hope the tea urn keeps boiling for years to come.”

Sarah Whitley, President of St Andrew Boat Club, added:

“Ian ‘Chalky’ White has been at the heart of St Andrew Boat Club for decades, working diligently as a volunteer to maintain and repair the club’s boats. He is probably the most recognised person across the membership, and we are delighted that his hard work and dedication - which quite literally keep the club on the water - have been recognised with a Scottish Rowing award.”

This award reflects not just years of service, but the kind of contribution that underpins clubs across Scotland - people who turn up, get stuck in, and make it possible for others to enjoy the sport.
