If you are looking for a fun way to get young people taking part in physical activity and trying out something new – The Scottish Rowing Junior Indoor League is for you!

Previously known as the Scottish Rowing Schools Indoor League, following growing interest from other organised youth groups we are pleased to open the league up to other groups as well as schools. This could be the juniors in your rowing club, other sports clubs, cadet groups, this list goes on! You just need to be an organised group with an appropriate adult leader who can be the liaison with Scottish Rowing, supervise the indoor rowing sessions, and to record and send the results back to us each round.

The purpose of the league is to encourage participation in indoor rowing, monitoring improvements and progress through the four rounds in the league, and for juniors to experience the thrill of a live competition among peers in the fourth round – for 2025 the fourth round was a live final which took place at Fettes College, Edinburgh, on Friday 21st of November.

Participation in all rounds is not essential – competitors may complete as much or as little of the league as they would like, although we would encourage participation in all rounds to get the most out of the experience. Competitors may also join the league at any point – if they miss a round, they can always take part in the next!

"The Scottish Indoor Rowing League is a fantastic way to test your limits and see what your mind and body can achieve in just a few minutes. It’s over quickly, but nothing beats the thrill of finding out what you’re capable of!

Rowing is the ultimate level playing field. It rewards hard work, grit, and determination above all else. Success here doesn't depend on how good you are at other sports; it's about what you bring to the machine. When your legs and lungs start burning, stay calm, focus on your technique, and keep your strokes long.

It’s an immensely satisfying sport where every attempt brings progress. And remember, the louder you cheer for your teammates, the faster they will go! If you enjoy the thrill of racing on the erg, take the next step and give it a go on the water. I started my own rowing career competing in this very indoor league, and I feel incredibly lucky to now spend my days chasing speed on the water. Who knows, taking part could be the start of your own journey to the world stage!"

- Miles Beeson, GB Rower (European Champion & 3x U23 World Champion)

How it works:

Schools or clubs enter the league by contacting us at league@scottish-rowing.org.uk

Juinors race over a set time (dictated by their school year) and schools/club representitive submit a score for rounds 1, 2 and 3. This is done in their school or club facilities (we may be able to offer local club contacts if you require access to rowing machines out with your school/clubs facility).

Scores for each round are added to the national leader board.
