Following a new injection of funding from sportscotland and the Scottish Funding Council, Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme for talented student athletes has relaunched as Winning Students 100.
Helping student athletes balance their studies with high performance training and competition, the newly-branded Winning Students 100 provides athletes with grants of up to £3000 and works with respective colleges and universities to offer additional support such as academic flexibility.
With funding secured until 2028, it is expected 500 scholarships will be awarded over the period with the programme also introducing a hardship fund to offer additional support to eligible student athletes. 106 scholarships have been awarded for 2023/24 across 28 different sports and 21 universities and colleges – this includes 11 rowers from 3 universities who met the Winning Students 100 programme criteria.

Scottish Rowing is saddened to hear of the passing of George Hunter OBE at the age of 97 on 20 December 2023.
When George left the army at the end of World War II, he became Secretary of the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association (SARA) (the predecessor to Scottish Rowing). His first task was to bring together the different rowing associations which existed in Scotland at that time, and bring ‘home’ those Scottish clubs who were affiliated to the ARA in London. Despite the obvious sense in of merging these associations, it took over four years until an agreement was reached and the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association emerged as the sole governing body in Scotland.

After more than 13 years with Scottish Rowing, including 10 as Chief Operating Officer, Amanda Cobb has today announced her intention to retire in Spring 2024, at the end of the current financial year.
Scottish Rowing will shortly begin a recruitment process to appoint Amanda’s successor.
Since joining Scottish Rowing in 2010, Amanda has overseen a period of significant development, growth and professionalisation of the sport as well as leading the response to the challenges and the restrictions during the pandemic, enabling the rowing community to feel connected during the lockdown period and to return to the water at the earliest opportunity. During her tenure, funding for rowing has more than quadrupled and Scotland’s rowers have enjoyed ‘best ever’ performances on the international stage at all levels of the pathway. She has overseen the introduction of a new discipline in Beach sprints as well as community projects in Glasgow and Ayr that are helping to bring rowing to underrepresented groups.
