A bumper head weekend on the Tideway awaits with Scottish clubs and athletes set to compete at the Schools’ Head of the River Race on Friday, the Head of the River Race on Saturday and the Vesta International Masters Head of the River Race on Sunday.
Schools Head of the River Race
Nine crews representing three Scottish school and club programmes are competing at the 2023 Schools’ Head of the River Race in London on Friday 17 March.
George Heriot’s School have four crews competing including two crews in both the boys’ and girls’ Championship Quad Sculls categories. The Heriot’s girls ‘A crew’ features Great Britain under 19 internationals Sarah Happs and Amy Newton.
The largest entry comes in the Boys’ Championship quad sculls – 55 entries - where Edinburgh’s St Andrew Boat Club will be hoping for a competitive performance with a strong crew featuring three Scotland internationals.
A large contingent from Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association features two women’s eights, one in both the J18 and J16 categories. They will be hoping to challenge at the top end of the field with some experienced athletes - after travelling over 500 miles to the competition.
Racing over the 4.5 mile Championship course from Chiswick to Putney commences at 12 noon.

Head of the River Race
Eleven Scottish club crews are amongst over 300 crews taking to the water in London on Saturday for the Head of the River Race, one of the largest rowing events in the country by participation numbers.
Edinburgh University Boat Club will be boating three crews starting 13th, 30th and 71st as they look to challenge against some of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland.
Other Scottish universities taking part include the University of St Andrews (239 / 262), Heriot-Watt University (271) and Strathclyde University (308) whilst there are club entries from St Andrew Boat Club (105) and Aberdeen Boat Club (229).
Two junior development crews will compete as the Scottish Argonauts – the ‘A crew’ consisting mainly of athletes drawn from the Scottish Rowing Junior Academy programme starts in 144th place with the younger ‘B crew’ starting 231st.
The first crew will cross the start line at 1pm on Saturday with Hammersmith Bridge an excellent vantage point for spectators.

Vesta International Masters Head of the River Race
Masters crews from across the UK and around the world will take to the Tideway on Sunday with a strong Scottish contingent amongst the 226 entries.
A composite crew from Strathclyde Park Rowing Club, Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club and the University of St Andrews Boat Club competes in the Women’s Masters 8+ (E/F) category, starting 29th.
St Andrew Boat Club have three crews competing including a Mixed 8+ (C) composite with Ireland’s Neptune Rowing Club, a Women’s Master’s 4x- (E) and a Master’s 4x- (D).
Heart of Scotland Boat Club, the alumni club of Heriot-Watt University, race a Master’s 8+ (A) whilst Aberdeen Boat Club take to the water in a Master’s 8+ (E).
The race gets underway at 2pm.
