Scottish Rowing and the Regatta Organising Committee are pleased to announce the intention to run an event for junior rowers at Strathclyde Park on the weekend of 5th/6th June 2021.With Covid restrictions allowing for an earlier return to the water for junior crews, and in recognition of the short window that junior rowers have to compete within their junior age group, Scottish Rowing and the Regatta Organising Committee are working on plans for a fun, inclusive event for J14 to J18 rowers.

As many people in the rowing community will now know a tragic accident occurred last weekend when two members of the Iowa State University Crew Club sadly lost their lives following a capsize during a training outing. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, fellow students and their local community.

We are pleased to advise that sportscotland has recently approved an addendum to the Scottish Rowing Return to Performance Training plan which enables a further 18 rowers from across Scotland to train under the Scottish Government’s dispensation for professional and performance sport.
These athletes have all achieved the relevant standards as outlined by the GB Rowing Team and they have been allowed to return to training to support their preparations for upcoming trials and assessments as they aim for selection to international teams this summer.

This March Jo is walking 10,000 steps per day throughout the month to help beat cancer - and the rest of the staff team are joining her!
The last 12 months have been difficult for everyone but for Jo Pinder, Scottish Rowing’s Membership Services Administrator, the challenges have been very different. It started with the discovery of a dangerously enlarged spleen during a holiday of a lifetime trip to New Zealand in January 2020 - just as the world was hearing of a new virus coming out of China. This abruptly ended the tour and further investigations back in the UK led to a diagnosis of Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of our dear friend and fellow rower Bob Reid who passed away in hospital earlier this week. Our thoughts are with Shona and their family at this very sad time.
Bob’s rowing career started whilst at school at the Aberdeen Academy in the late 1960’s and following his move south to Glasgow to attend RSAMD he rowed with Clyde ARC before moving up river to join GUBC and the Glasgow Argonauts BC.

We hope that as Scottish Rowing members, friends, and volunteers – you are keeping safe and well and are looking forward to getting back on the water, back to rowing.
We know that the Scottish Rowing community is strong and keen to come together again when it is safe to do so. We all – staff, competitors, organisers, volunteers, coaches - miss the fun and excitement of competition.

Scottish Rowing is extremely disappointed to report that an indoor rower from Scotland has been found guilty of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and has been suspended for a period of 4 years.
World Rowing today published the outcome of Anti-Doping Disciplinary Proceedings against Robert Strachan, an indoor rower and member of Scottish Rowing. Mr Strachan competed at the World Rowing Indoor Championships in Paris, France on 7 February 2020 and was tested in competition on behalf of World Rowing. The presence of terbutaline, clenbuterol and exogenous testosterone were detected in the sample provided. World Rowing was responsible for the results management of the case and the final decision. Mr Strachan was issued with a 4-year ban from sport backdated to the start of his provisional suspension on 20 March 2020.

Further to the First Minister’s announcement today, we are reviewing our guidance in the light of the new, increased restrictions announced and will publish revised detailed guidance for rowing as soon as possible.
The primary message is "stay at home" as much as possible. By law, from 5 January, in a level 4 area, you can only leave your home (or garden) for an essential purpose. The essential purposes are further defined and explained on the Scottish Government website. Please note the following key points from the Scottish Government website.

I think everyone will agree that 2020 has been a challenging year! It is hard not to look back over the last few months at all the things we have missed in our rowing lives; club rivalries on the water, time spent catching up with friends on the riverbank, the famous Strathclyde Park Danny special and cheering on the GB Rowing team in Tokyo. There will also be some for whom this pandemic has left deeper scars of financial hardship, illness or the loss of a loved one.
But for most of us there are still things to celebrate and be proud of. The support we have had from clubs who have worked so hard to keep members active and engaged; the flexibility, adaptability and passion of the Scottish Rowing staff and volunteers who have supported clubs and provided opportunities and activities in a frustrating and uncertain environment, and the understanding from our membership of the need to prioritise public health being only a few.
