As Scottish Rowing prepares for its 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) in 2031, we are looking to form a volunteer Archivist Team to help preserve and share the rich history of rowing in Scotland.

Originally founded as the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association (SARA), the organisation became known as Scottish Rowing in the early 2010s as part of a wider modernisation.

This voluntary opportunity is open to individuals or small teams with an interest in history, heritage, sport or storytelling. You don’t need to be a professional archivist - enthusiasm, curiosity and care matter most.

What you’ll help with

  • Reviewing and cataloguing historical material held by Scottish Rowing
  • Supporting clubs, by agreement, to identify and document their own archives
  • Digitising selected items such as photographs or documents
  • Helping capture key moments, people and stories from across Scottish rowing
  • Suggesting ways archive material could be shared in the lead-up to 2031

Roles can be shaped around your interests and availability.

How the team will work

The Archivist Team will report into the Chief Executive of Scottish Rowing, with support from a named staff contact. Any engagement with clubs or external heritage bodies will be agreed in advance and handled with care.

A small project budget will be made available to support the work of the Archivist Team, with expenditure agreed in advance.

Get involved

If you would like to help ensure Scottish Rowing’s history is properly recorded and celebrated as we approach our Sesquicentennial, we’d love to hear from you.

If you would like a bit more detail before getting in touch, you can read our short Volunteer Archivist Team briefing note here.

Please send a short expression of interest outlining your background, interests and any relevant experience to jobs@scottish-rowing.org.uk

Expressions of interest will be reviewed as they are received.
