Nine crews from Scotland took to the Tideway last Saturday to race at what will be their last head race of the season, before their focus turns to the spring regatta season and 2000m racing.

As is typical in a non-Olympic year, the race saw the unique sight of athletes from the GB Rowing Team return to their home clubs and race under domestic vests. This year the headship was taken by Scots Miles Beeson (former Aberdeen Schools RA member) and Archie Drummond along with their crewmates from Leander Club ‘A’ to lift the Fairbairn Trophy. Former Clydesdale ARC and Edinburgh Uni BC rower, Matthew Fielding, was also high up the placings as he raced in his Leander ‘B’ crew that finished fourth place overall.

Edinburgh University Boat Club rounded out a successful head season by taking home their second Tideway trophy of the year as their ‘A’ crew became the first winners of The Scott Skirving Trophy, with their 15th place finish, ranking them fourth overall amongst the University eligible crews, behind Cambridge University, University of London & Oxford Brookes University. The Scott Skirving Trophy is awarded to the fastest academic crew outside of the Thames Valley, containing no experienced International Senior Athletes or U23 Medallists.

Just as was their women’s squad two weeks earlier, Edinburgh Uni BC ‘B’ were the second ranked Scottish crew, finishing 32nd overall and 9th in the University rankings. The crew Glasgow Uni BC finished 54th overall, 8th in the Jackson Trophy ranking for non-tideway club crews (this is due to their collaboration with students from other Glasgow based universities). Scotlands lone open club crew from St Andrew BC followed next down the course, as their crew landed 58th on the results sheet, leaving them as 26th ranked club crew and 9th in the Jackson rankings.

The Scottish Argonauts crew, having already found their way to London following flight cancellations also then worked their way through the field to finish up at 179th having started way back at number 318. The crew was the only junior entry from Scotland, finishing 10th in the Junior category. The crew came together via the Scottish Rowing Junior Development programme, working with volunteer coaches to provide the young athletes the opportunity to race at events in calibre crews that they may not get the chance to race at without this collaboration. The crew was formed of athletes from Aberdeen Schools RA, St Andrew BC, Inverness RC, The Glasgow Academy, Stirling RC and George Heriots’ School BC.
