The 18th of March saw Scottish Rowing, in partnership with both Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, host the Scottish School’s Indoor Regional Championships.
The simultaneous events saw over 200 pupils from around 20 schools stretching from the West coast to the East coast of Scotland compete, both individually and as part of age group relay teams, all in the name of school pride.
A number of performances across both events were truly exceptional, with the standard and maturity of rowing highlighting the growing strength of rowing within our schools. A notable mention going to James Morrison, of Lomond School, breaking his own World Record in the S2 1k with a time of 3:17.0 (unofficial).
“Our school’s competitions are a great opportunity for us to bring rowing to a wider demographic that perhaps hadn’t considered rowing as a sport they could do, let alone be competitive in.“ – Mark Senter, Coaching and Development Manager.
“Rowing is one of the few sports available to young people that gives everyone an even platform to be competitive. The highlight of these events for me is seeing people, that wouldn’t normally be seen as being sporty, jump on the rowing machine and be successful in a sport. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, rowing really is a sport for all.” – Jonathan Cheyne, West RDM.
Scottish Rowing would like to thank both the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, their respective rowing clubs, the volunteers who helped support the event on the day and of course the schools that turned out to compete.
