Clyde Valley High School is one of the newest schools in Scotland to take up rowing. A project initiated by Scottish Rowing and North Lanarkshire Council has been set up to offer a wider range of rowing participation opportunities, spreading the delivery of rowing in local schools.
Since January 2014, Clyde Valley High School along with other Secondary schools in North Lanarkshire have been delivering indoor rowing programs to many of their students. Teachers at Secondary schools in North Lanarkshire attended Scottish Rowing’s Community Coach Training Program, allowing them to deliver a 6 week indoor rowing program to their students. Scottish Rowing’s Indoor Rowing Buddy Book, a new resource that links the Education Scotland Curriculum for Health & Physical Education was piloted throughout the initiative. This resource is now available to all attendees at Scottish Rowing’s Community Coach Training Program.
30 students at Clyde Valley High School have been participating in the indoor rowing program at the school and at the Scottish Rowing Centre, Strathclyde Park in readiness for the 2014 North Lanarkshire Schools Indoor Rowing Competition.
‘’The pupil uptake in school rowing training has been fantastic and I’ve had to put on extra training session to accommodate the numbers. The pupils are really excited about the fantastic opportunity they have received to train at the Scottish Rowing Centre and use the excellent facilities.’’ Clare Hughes, Clyde Valley.
The schools competing at the event were Dalziel High School, Our Ladys High Cumbernauld, Cumbernauld High, Clyde Valley High School and Airdrie Academy.
Scottish Rowing is excited to see more young people participating in rowing, especially as there are lots of opportunities to transition to local clubs.
If your school or community group wants to try rowing or to attend one of the Community Coach Training courses, speak to your local Scottish Rowing Development Manager Andrew Swift andrew.swift@scottish-rowing.org.uk or visit http://www.scottish-rowing.org.uk/.
