Scottish Rowing welcomes the proactive steps taken by ASRA in addressing historical safeguarding concerns.

We are committed to working closely with ASRA’s Trustees and committee to ensure a safer and stronger future for everyone in our sport.

ASRA Statement:

"ASRA recognises the strength of feeling and concern that historic safeguarding matters, which have recently come to light, have caused within our membership, across the rowing community, and among the public. We regret the distress and uncertainty that this period has brought to those who care about our club and our sport.

"Our priority now is to ensure that the welfare of all participants is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to working openly with Scottish Rowing, Children First, Sport Aberdeen and other partners to strengthen our safeguarding culture, rebuild trust, and ensure that everyone can enjoy rowing in a safe, respectful and supportive environment.

"To that end, we have agreed to:

● Rebuild and strengthen our charity's governance through the recruitment of additional, independent Trustees. Increasing the board of Trustees to 5.
● Strengthen the club’s committee by the introduction of 2 additional office bearer’s roles, Boys & Girls Junior Vice Captain positions and the addition of a number of co-opted roles.
● Welcome the oversight and guidance of a Scottish Rowing Director in a co-opted committee role for a defined period to be determined by Scottish Rowing.
● Participate fully in the forthcoming Scottish Rowing independent safeguarding review and act on its recommendations.
● Support and take part in a Safe Sport education programme for all relevant individuals.
● Advocate positively for survivor support, treating all survivors of abuse with dignity and respect.

"We know that words alone are not enough. By taking these steps, and by working with our partners and the community, we aim to demonstrate through our actions that ASRA is moving forward with transparency, accountability and care for every person who rows with us or supports our sport."
