The GB Rowing Team Under 19 Regatta took place on Sunday at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, with Scotland’s junior rowers excelling despite the challenging circumstances.

A heavy tail wind on the day created difficult rowing conditions however the Scottish athletes were not put off recording strong performances across three of the four boat classes.  The conditions forced a change to the published race format with a 1900 metre time trial seeding crews into side-by-side finals raced over 1000 metres.

In the women’s pairs event, Maisie and Zoe from Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association (ASRA) were the standout combination across both the time trial, which they won by over 5 seconds, and in their final.  Scotland demonstrated real strength in depth in this event producing 50% of the rowers who qualified for the A final.

In second place in the time trial was Amy from George Heriot’s School (with her partner from Headington School), whilst a George Heriot’s School / George Watson’s College composite crew of Isla B and Isla W finished 5^th.  Morven from Glasgow Academy finished 6^th out of the 17 junior women’s pairs with her partner from Tideway Scullers School.  Sarah from George Heriot’s School and her partner from Emanuel School were 16^th.

Whilst the ASRA pair maintained their top spot in the side-by-side racing, Isla B and Isla W moved up into 4^th place edging past Amy and her partner who finished just ahead of Morven and partner.

In the corresponding boy’s event, Freddy and Alexander from St Andrew Boat Club raced well in the time trial to finish 5^th out of 27 boats, holding their position in the subsequent A final.  Their teammates Hector and Ben found the conditions more challenging, taking on a lot of water before placing 24^th.

British Rowing Start Programme athlete Josh, representing Strathclyde Park Rowing Club, demonstrated good speed to finish 2^nd in the men’s single scull time trial and he backed this up with a 4^th place finish in the A final.  Cesare from Glasgow Academy (15^th) and Seb from George Watson’s College (17^th) both progressed to the C final following the morning’s time trial however it was the Watson’s sculler who coped better in the conditions over the shortened side-by-side race, taking the win with Cesare finishing in 6^th place.

Following the Spring Assessments last month, four Scottish junior rowers have been selected to represent Great Britain at the upcoming Munich International Junior Regatta (7-8 May).  Zoe from ASRA will race in the junior women’s pair whilst her teammate Maisie is part of the junior women’s four along with Amy from George Heriot’s School.  Josh from Strathclyde Park Rowing Club is part of the junior men’s quad scull.

Eleven of the Scottish athletes competing at the GB Rowing Team U19 Regatta are supported through the Scottish Rowing Junior Academy programme – applications for the 2022/23 season intake will be open by the end of June.
