Following the Scottish Government’s announcement on Thursday 20th August, Scottish Rowing is delighted to publish Version 3 of the Phase 3 Guidance for Rowing which allows for the welcome return to rowing in crew boats from 24th August for adults and juniors.  This will enable many more rowers to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of being active on the water.

This is a significant step forward in the Return to Rowing, however as stated by the First Minister there is a continued need for caution as we progress.  Public health and wellbeing remains the most pressing priority, and we all have a responsibility to do what we can to continue to suppress the spread of the Covid-19 virus as we return safely to the water.

With this in mind, we are recommending a phased return starting with the reintroduction of rowing in double sculls and pairs.  Larger boats will be phased in gradually according to the timetable below.

From 24th August - pairs and double sculls

From 4th September - quads and fours

From 18th September – eights.

The implementation of these changes is subject to our published guidance and clubs are required to risk assess and implement appropriate mitigation prior to introducing crew boats.  We would ask rowers to be patient and supportive of this process.

We continue to work closely with sportscotland, Scottish Government and other Scottish Governing bodies to develop guidance to ensure rowing can take place safely.  We expect there to be further updates to our guidance over the coming weeks, in particular:

  • As per the Scottish Government announcement regarding gym and indoor physical activity reopening from 31st August, further guidance for clubs will be issued next week.
  • We are currently reviewing our guidance for competition and will be updating this following further consultation with our member clubs.

As always, we encourage all rowers to check our website and social media channels for the latest guidance and always check with your club before going rowing.
