It might be Scotland's newest Coastal Rowing Club but Eastern Amateur (EACRC) succeeded in finishing second in its first ever Skiff World Championships last week at Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.

After a week of extremely tight racing the Portobello-based EACRC finished just one point off the top score, won by the Irish club, Dundrum, whilst North Berwick came a close third.  Eastern brought home four gold medals, three silvers and a bronze.

Despite having only finished building its first boat in December, EACRC's membership is thriving and the club is keen to promote the different branches of rowing to new people.

This Sunday (14 August), as part of Scottish Rowing's Project Rio campaign, the club will be offering a Come & Try event at Portobello beach (in front of the Swimming Pool, at the bottom of Bellfield Street).

"We will start at 11am and run through until 4 pm provided there is enough demand and the weather is OK," said Club Secretary, Sally Champion.

"The sessions will be 30 minutes long and we can take two novices at a time. The intention is to give a brief land-based introduction and then get folk out for 20 minutes or so in the boat, go through the parts of the stroke, and enjoy being on the water."

"The ethos behind our club is to develop the exciting sport of coastal rowing. We currently only have capacity in our youth section and over 50s but we do operate a waiting list and can sign-post people to the many other coastal clubs nearby."
